Publisher’s Description:

A horse race in trousers on Rotten Row. Visiting a gaming hall in a dress that would make her mother faint. Sneaking an invitation to a masquerade ball attended by only the wickedest, most debauched members of society…

None of these things are scaring off bookish but strong-willed Amelia Bishop’s stuffy, egotistical fiancé.

The only thing left is to entice childhood friend Nicholas Wakefield into a truly engagement-ending scandal. The Wakefields are the height of propriety, and Nicholas’s parents have made it clear a wife from the neighboring Bishop family would be unacceptable…

But Nicholas would give up his family and his fortune if Amelia would ever see him as more than just a childhood friend. He’ll go along with her scheme, even if it means ruining them both, because he’s got a plan that will change her mind about him being merely the boy next door.

My Thoughts:

(First Reviewed July 13th, 2017)

This is the first book I have read by this author but it will not be the last. I fell in love with the writing style and characters almost from the start.

This friends to lovers historical romance is wonderfully written and an enjoyable read.

Amelia Bishop is not an adventurous sort of young lady, but she is strong-willed. She is currently stuck with a stuffy fiancé not at all to her liking. She will do almost anything to get rid of the cad. These things have included a horse race in trousers on Rotten Row, going to a gaming hall in a dress that would make her sainted mother faint and sneaking an invitation to a scandalous ball  Nothing she has done so far has scared off the unwanted fiancé who seems more determined than ever to wed her.

Nicholas Wakefield was her closest childhood friend. He has been secretly in love with Amelia for a very long time. He wrote his feelings in letters to her that he never sent. His family is the height of propriety and his parents have stressed to him that a wife from the neighboring Bishops would not be acceptable… Will he participate in Amelia’s scheme of a truly engagement-ending scandal?

Will he defy his parent’s edict and marry the woman he loves?

I gave this book 4.75 of 5 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 4.5 of 5 flames.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

 Publisher’s Description:

Kissing a rake in full view of the stable boy. Unchaperoned picnics with no one to see what happens. Someone to show her things young ladies should never do with handsome, unmarried dukes…Julia Bishop would give anything to have these things happen outside of her imagination.

Isolated from Victorian society, Julia never meets anyone who could bring those fantasies to life. Until a devastatingly handsome man arrives at her sister’s estate—the new Duke of Albermarle.

Jasper DeVere left London to privately grieve his grandfather’s death. Julia is just the distraction he needs, and she wants no future with him, just right now. When their all-out affair slips dangerously close to something more, they both know society would never allow Julia to become a duchess. And the queen would never approve a marriage. With Jasper’s inevitable return to London, Jasper and Julia can go back to their separate lives or risk everything to choose each other.

Publisher’s Description:

A hotheaded Highlander and a fiery English Lady–what could go wrong?

At age eleven, Alex Sinclair pledges an oath to the Duke of Chatham promising to serve and protect his illegitimate daughter, Lucy FitzHarris. Nine years later, the duke unexpectedly takes Alex up on his vow, offering the future Laird of Balforss his daughter’s hand in marriage.

Now a man, hotheaded Alex has difficulty convincing Lucy—who would rather starve to death than marry a vulgar Scot—to go through with the arranged marriage. Once Lucy arrives in Scotland, she cannot resist the magic of Balforss or the allure of her handsome Highland warrior. But when Alex seemingly betrays Lucy right before their wedding, she is tricked into running away. Alex must rein in his temper to rescue his lady from unforeseen danger and Lucy must swallow her pride if she hopes to wed the Highlander she has come to love.

My Thoughts:

I loved this novel with it’s witty and charming dialog. This book has it all, charm, romance, a wonderful background story and sinister intent all wrapped up in the sweeping landscape of Scotland.

It is an amazingly well written debut novel and I look forward to more by this talented author.

I loved how we start out with the back story of how these two met as children with an oath by our eventual hero to protect the eventual heroine.

Alex can not remember much about Lucy and since she is the daughter of a Duke even though she is  illegitimate she must be a spoiled, petulant shrew of a lady. He decides upon finding himself betrothed to her to find out just what she is like. That means when they meet again he will not reveal who he is but observe her instead.

Lucy doesn’t remember much about Alex either but when she discovers his deception she is sure it was meant to be a cruel joke.

Will this inauspicious beginning lead to an eternal love for these two evenly matched characters.

I could not put this book down once I had gotten past the background story. It is one for the keeper shelf!

I gave this debut novel 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and character development and a sensual rating of 3 of 5 flames. The actual intimacy in this story was a long time coming with it being consummated on our hero and heroine’s actual wedding night. It was a sweetly written part of this story.

I received a complimentary digital ARC of this title from the publisher via NetGalley to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

About The Author:

B1c4YT7xXtS__UX250_Hi, I’m Jennifer Trethewey and I write about men in kilts because, hey, what’s not to love about a man in a kilt? I was lucky enough to travel to Scotland twice. I’m planning a third trip next year. I have fallen in love with the Highlands and all things Scottish: the people, their language, cuisine, customs, idioms, humor, history, intense sense of pride, and, most of all, the land—the perfect setting for sweeping romantic tales of love, strife, and glory. As they say, Scotland is pure dead brilliant!

As for more personal stuff, I’m an actress, former co-artistic director of a professional theater company, and my husband and I operate an improv comedy club. I live with my comedian husband in the Midwest where I’ve been ever since college.

I write both contemporary and historical fiction full time. I like to read romance, mystery, fantasy, and paranormal, as well as literary fiction and non-fiction. As you can imagine, I’m a big fan of Outlander and Herself. I adore traveling to new places (but I hate flying). I love movies and music and dogs and good wine and I love to enjoy them all with my friends.

Publisher’s Description:

Some say life is a grand adventure—but for Lady Abigail Rutland, it’s a tremendous bore. As a woman of noble birth in eighteenth-century England, she is expected to keep quiet and marry well, but she longs for so much more.

“Be careful what you wish for,” the old saying goes. After a chaotic night, she wakes up in the hold of a former slaver with her body bound and her hair shorn. She is soon “rescued” by an American privateer, who assumes she is a cabin boy and puts her to work. Eager for adventure, Abigail maintains her disguise despite a budding attraction to the infamous Captain Jacob Thorne. Meanwhile, Captain Thorne schemes to spring his kin from a British prison.

What follows is a thrilling tale that tosses and churns with the high seas. Set during the height of the American Revolution, Sweet Vengeance contains accurate historical details that enrich and complicate the story. Abigail yearns for danger and excitement, and it isn’t long before she discovers that the most urgent peril comes from within her own wild heart.
